Ethics is more than doing "the right thing". As the model of pharmacy changes, the pharmacist, student pharmacist, and pharmacy technician must be familiar with ethical principles that affect their practice. They must be able to make sound decisions based on those ethical principles. This presentation will address how ethics ultimately affects patient safety in pharmacy. Participants will obtain information that will make their practice safer for their patients.

Summary

Ethics is more than doing "the right thing". As the model of pharmacy changes, the pharmacist, student pharmacist, and pharmacy technician must be familiar with ethical principles that affect their practice. They must be able to make sound decisions based on those ethical principles. This presentation will address how ethics ultimately affects patient safety in pharmacy. Participants will obtain information that will make their practice safer for their patients and have an opportunity to participate in a conversation about ethics in pharmacy.

Objectives:
  1. Recall the four standard healthcare ethical principles.
  2. List historical examples where ethics affected patient safety.
  3. Identify decision points to maximize patient safety from case studies.
  4. Identify resources available to assist pharmacists.

This lesson is a knowledge-based CE activity and is targeted to pharmacists and technicians.

Dixie Leikach is the President of PEER – Pharmacy Ethics, Education and Resources, a non-profit she founded July 2015. She is also the Vice President for YOUR Community Pharmacy, a group of independently owned pharmacies in Maryland.
