The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens standard was revised by the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000 to include safer medical devices and an exposure control plan. Immunizing pharmacists and others exposed to blood must meet the requirements of this standard, including annual training, or they will risk facing huge fines. OPA is offering a webinar format for pharmacists to comply with this OSHA standard. The speaker will discuss potential blood borne hazards, safer practices designed to reduce/avoid needlestick and other sharps injuries, and effective post-exposure procedures. This program will provide the opportunity for interactive questions.
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
Identify potential bloodborne pathogens and their mode of transmission
Explain the elements required to comply with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
Describe the engineering controls and work flow practices that can help minimize the risks of exposure Identify the key components of an Exposure Control Plan
List the steps of an effective post-exposure plan
If you administer immunizations and have not completed such a training within the last 12 months, now is your opportunity.
This knowledge-based activity is targeted to pharmacists in all practice settings.
The Ohio Pharmacists Foundation Inc. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The Ohio Pharmacists Foundation will provide 1.0 contact hour (0.1 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credit for pharmacists and technicians who complete the webinar and the evaluation. 0129-0000-16-059-L04-P; 0129-0000-16-059-L04-T.
