Summary
Brief overview of the current opioid epidemic and the key role pharmacists play in preventing opioid-related overdoses. Will also review the new Kansas legislation that allows pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a prescription and the necessary steps pharmacists must take to comply. Key talking points include discussing appropriate counseling points that go along with naloxone dispensing, review the different naloxone formulations, risk factors for opioid-related overdose, and signs and symptoms to watch for.


At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the pharmacist’s role in preventing opioid-related overdose deaths
2. Review indication and route of administration of naloxone
3. Discuss new Kansas legislation on naloxone dispensing
4. Provide necessary patient counseling for safe naloxone use


This is a knowledge-based CE activity and is targeted to pharmacists and technicians.

Presenter: Matt Minnick, PharmD, BCACP
Matt was born and raised in Kansas however he visited his grandfather’s house in Colorado most summers and winters and considers Colorado his second home. He enjoys skiing, wakeboarding, sand volleyball and getting outside when possible. He completed his undergrad in Kansas and headed off to the Mile-High City for pharmacy school. He realized he wanted to work in the ambulatory care field during his last year of pharmacy school and decided to pursue a PGY1 residency. He completed his residency in Des Moines with an emphasis on pain management and was able to apply what he learned to his current position at the Kansas City VA working in pain management.
