DOH Approves the Suicide Prevention Course for Pharmacists

The Washington State Department of Health has approved Suicide Prevention Training for Pharmacists by WSPA and Forefront. This three-hour training, developed by pharmacists and suicide experts from Forefront, explains suicide statistics and stigma, and provides tangible steps to prevent suicides. It is ACPE accredited for pharmacists and technicians. All Washington State-licensed pharmacists are required to take a DOH approved, three-hour minimum Suicide Prevention Course prior to their 2018 renewal date.

The comprehensive offerings will include:

·         An online course through the WSPA’s Online CE Center will be posted by July 28th, 2017.

·         A live training for groups is available by contacting WSPA at 425-228-7171 or

·         Also, an optional, hour-long class with role play and discussion to enhance online training will be available. This will be ideal to provide hands on application during staff meetings, and trainings.

WSPA will be holding a two-day train-the-trainer for pharmacists on August 9th. Pharmacists interested in being a suicide prevention trainer should submit a statement of interest, and a CV highlighting teaching experience to Jenny Arnold ( by July 17th.

WSPA is proud to partner in the prevention of suicide deaths with Forefront, a leader in sucide prevention. Pharmacists are patient-care providers with a critical role in suicide identification and prevention. Also, pharmacists have an increased rate of suicide, so it is important we have the skills to help our peers and colleagues.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will the course be available to non WSPA members?

WSPA exists for the advancement and development of Washington State Pharmacy Professionals, and therefore the course will be available to all pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, regardless of WSPA membership. However, our members are essential to our existence and support our functioning on behalf of the profession, so we do encourage membership in WSPA.

My license renews in July, what am I supposed to take now?

Pharmacists are required to take the Suicide Prevention Training before their 2018 renewal date. DOH was required to post the list of trainings by July 1st 2017. So you have a year to complete the required training.

Is there a fee for the train the trainer?

There will not be a fee for those pharmacists who participate in the training to be a Suicide Prevention Trainer.

What will the cost of the online program?

The training will cost $90 for the 3 hr ACPE approved Suicide Prevention Training. WSPA members receive 50% off all online WSPA courses, so the cost will be $45 for members.

Why is there a cost for a legally mandated training?

The legislation requiring the training for health care professionals did not come with funding for the course development, accreditation or hosting.

Someone I care(d) about struggled with suicide, where can I find our more and support prevention work?

The WSPA has been impressed with the advocacy, vision and resources developed by our partners at Forefront Suicide Prevention. Anyone who wants to make a difference in our community with respect to suicide awareness and prevention should connect with them, and attend their annual fall banquet.
