Now is the time to speak up...

The rules regulating pharmacy practice in Washington State are going to be rewritten. This is a big undertaking and crucial time to be engaged! We have an incredible opportunity to address previous concerns and update our rules to reflect and improve current pharmacy practice.

The Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission starts work on re-writing some comprehensive rules on Wednesday and Thursday, September 13 and 14, 2017. The regular business meeting will follow on Friday, September 15. Unlike the previous project started in 2012, with an analysis of existing rules, the Commission has a defined goal to develop rules that focus on outcomes, and standards that ensure patient safety provisions. The rules should be flexible, helping us achieve greater innovation in pharmaceutical care.

The Commission adopted the 2011 NABP Taskforce’s Technology Systems recommendations on Pharmacy Practice. The recommendations recognize technology can improve patient outcomes with broadly written rules, placing the responsibility on pharmacists and pharmacy license holders.

Rather than focusing on the current structure and language of the Commission’s rules, PQAC will be starting from scratch. Please bring your ideas on new principal topics for rule chapters, and subjects to cover under those topics. For example, if a chapter title was Pharmacy Practice Standards, what type of standards should fall under that chapter?

Your participation is key to the success of this project. The structure of the workshops is best facilitated with on-site participants. Please make this event a priority for you and your colleagues.
