Washington State Pharmacy Association Elects VanderHouwen 2019 President

Washington State Pharmacy Association Elects VanderHouwen 2019 President

Washington State Pharmacy Association (WSPA) is proud to announce their 2018 Board of Directors.

Renton, WA – After the 2017 ballots were counted, five new members were elected to the WSPA Board of Directors. Kari VanderHouwen will serve as 2018 President-Elect joining Beverly Sheridan, the 2018 WSPA President. Leon Alzola has been elected to serve as 2018-2020 Secretary/Treasurer and Chris Greer, Brad Hanna and Darell Connor will join the current WSPA Board of Directors to lead the association next year. WSPA CEO Jeff Rochon is excited to work with these leaders, stating “I am inspired by the tremendous interest and dedication of our volunteer leadership and I am so grateful for their commitment to the protection and advancement of our profession. We would like to express our heart -felt appreciation to everyone that applied for a leadership position. Each candidate was superbly qualified and is considered a great asset to WSPA’s membership.”

WSPA President Elect – Kari VanderHouwen, RPh., Owner of Duvall Family Drugs
VanderHouwen has previously served on the WSPA Board of Directors, and received numerous awards including WSPA Pharmacist of the Year, Washington State Distinguished Young Pharmacist, David Almquist Award and the University of Washington School of Pharmacy Faculty Excellence Award. She has served on the board of directors for IPC since 2014, and juggles running a pharmacy and taking care of a busy family that includes her husband and two children. In her statement of objectives, she writes, “During my term, I will work to ensure that Washington pharmacists are at the forefront of pharmacy provider’s integration into the health care team and help us to deliver progressive care to our patients.”

WSPA Secretary/ Treasurer – Leon Alzola, R.Ph., Director of Pharmacy for Fred Meyer, Inc.
Alzola has previously served as WSPA President and is the chair of the Washington Recovery Assistance Program for Pharmacy Professionals (WRAPP). His contributions to the profession have earned him several awards including the Washington State Distinguished Young Pharmacist, Bill Mueller Outstanding Mentor of the Year and WSPA Pharmacist of the Year. He is a dedicated member of WSPA that confirms, “I will work to protect our profession and fight for the changes that are important and necessary to promote the profession of pharmacy in our state.  At this point in my career, I feel I have the skills to oversee the financial budget of the WSPA. I will, as well, protect our assets and work to grow them.”

Pharmacy Director-At-Large – Christopher Greer, BPharm., Pharmacy Manager for St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute
Greer is the current WSPA Health Systems Academy Chair and is a member of WSPA Health Systems Leadership team. He is involved with the Institutional Review Board in Spokane, WA, a Board Member of the Immunization Action Coalition of the Inland Northwest and serves on the Executive Committee for the Spokane Regional Health District Tobacco Task Force.  Chris is an adjunct faculty member at WSU College of Pharmacy since 2006 and has been involved in Spokane-area Scouting community for many years. He decidedly states, “As a board member, my main priority would be to foster member engagement in the association's efforts to shape our profession's future.”

Pharmacy Director-At-Large –  Brad Hanna, PharmD., Regional Pharmacy Supervisor, Costco Wholesale
Hannah has served the past three years on the WSPA Board of Directors.  He is a member of the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association, and served in association leadership in California on the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) Board of Trustees and Executive Committee. He and his partner, Becky Dant, PharmD. (Director of Professional Services at Costco) enjoy traveling and have visited several countries in Europe. They also enjoy general aviation as a hobby and can be found flying in a Cessna 172. Bradley is proud to say, “With the passing of the provider status bill in WA, pharmacists are being recognized as equal members of the healthcare team. This will allow pharmacists to take an even bigger role in patient care and practice at the top of their education and licensure. It will be important for not only pharmacists to adapt to this changing role, but also for pharmacy technicians to advance their role as part of the team.”

Technician Director –  Darrel Connor, MHA, CPhT

Connor is currently the Pharmacy Operations Supervisor at CHI Franciscan St. Joseph’s Medical Center
He is a continuing education author and peer reviewer for the National Pharmacy Technician Association. Darrell is an amateur photographer, indoor and outdoor rock climber, helicopter pilot student, skateboarder and Krav Maga/MMA training enthusiast.  Connor embraces his new position stating, “Since pharmacy technicians play an integral role in compounding sterile and non-sterile products, I want to investigate enhancing their roles in gauging and analyzing the quality metrics behind those practices; this is especially important with the upcoming changes to USP 797 and 800.  Through my service as the new Technician Director for WSPA, I will make it my mission to be the voice for all pharmacy technicians in the state of Washington to propel the profession to new heights. “
