NCPA Statement on House “Gag Clause” Legislation

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (March 20, 2018) — The National Community Pharmacists Association supports the introduction of the Prescription Transparency Act of 2018, a bipartisan bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that grants pharmacists the ability to make patients aware if there is a lower cost option for their prescription drugs. Reps. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Morgan Griffith (R-Va.), Austin Scott (R-Ga.), Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) are original cosponsors of the legislation.

“We salute Representatives Carter and Welch for their efforts to help patients get the best price for their prescription drugs,” said National Community Pharmacists Association CEO B. Douglas Hoey, Pharmacist, MBA. "Pharmacists should be able to advise patients about the lowest-cost ways to access their medications. The Prescription Transparency Act of 2018 will assure that they can do so.”

The U.S. Senate introduced two bills two bills last week that address the same issue.

“Our hope is this renewed legislative push is just the tip of the iceberg in addressing the problems that arise out of the pharmacy benefit manager business model, which lacks transparency and adds cost to the system.”
