NALOXONE STANDING ORDER ANNOUNCEMENT FROM WA DOH

The Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission (Commission) has been working with the Department of Health in developing a statewide standing order for naloxone to help with the ongoing opioid crisis. The Department will be announcing the statewide standing order tomorrow, August 28, 2019.

The Commission wanted to provide this update to our licensees to prepare the pharmacy community for patients who may arrive requesting naloxone under the standing order. The standing order will allow for any individual or entity to obtain naloxone from pharmacies without a patient specific prescription issued by a health care provider.

Naloxone is very safe and does not have serious side effects if accidentally given to someone who is not experiencing an opioid overdose. Individuals and entities will be encouraged to go to pharmacies to obtain naloxone for themselves or for those that might witness an overdose.

More information will be published today on the Department of Health’s Overdose and Naloxone page.
