On July 2nd, 2014 the DEA announced it's intention to schedule tramadol as a schedule IV controlled substance.  This change will be effective August 18th.  The Washington PMP will also collect the dispensing of tramadol as well.  THe DEA Final Rules can be read in the Federal Register.

The Washington Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission published clarification of the new rules in the July 3rd PQAC Newsletter.  The newsletter reminds pharmacies they must inventory tramadol on August 18th.  In addition to treating all tramadol prescriptions as controlled substances on or after August 18th, "if a prescription for a tramadol product was issued prior to August 18, 2014 and refills were authorized, as of August 18, 2014 those refills must be limited to no more than five and must be dispensed no later than six months after the date the prescription was initially issued."
