The Door to Coverage for Pharmacist-Provided Patient Care is Finally Open!

The passage of SB 5557 requires health plans to include pharmacists in their provider networks, allowing patients to have insurance coverage for care and not solely medications. This patient-access improvement opens the door for pharmacists to provide patient care services covered under the medical benefit. This is the first law of its kind in the country!

In 2016, the law was limited to pharmacists in certain hospitals and clinics, and the roll-out has been very exciting. Thousands of patients received patient care services provided by pharmacists, which were covered by their health insurance! As January 1, 2017, pharmacists in all practice settings can enroll in health plan provider networks and provide covered patient care services.

The door is finally open! The WSPA can help pharmacists who want to start offering covered services to their patients. Learn how to successfully bill for medical services and join us at the Medical Billing Workshop in Spokane on April 22, 2017 or view our online Medical Billing CE modules at
