Tobacco Cessation Certificate: Pharmacists as Tobacco Cessation Counselors

At the completion of this activity, the pharmacist will be able to:

·         List different cessation products, techniques and counseling tools

·         Identify the role of the pharmacist in tobacco cessation

·         Utilize “Prescription To Quit” as a Patient Care Service


Activity Description:

One of the most positive, cost-effective influences any healthcare professional can have is to help a patient quit smoking.  This certification program is designed to prepare pharmacists to identify patients who do smoke and to present a range of possible options, from quick counseling to long-term individual and group counseling programs, all designed to help smokers quit.


The primary goal of this certification program is to enable you to implement a smoking cessation counseling program in your practice setting.  By completing this course, you will earn 6 hours of continuing education credit, while becoming certified by the WSPA as an educational resource for patients who want to quit smoking.

Faculty Bio: Cassandra Song is a California transplant, originally from Los Angeles, CA but currently lives in West Seattle, WA. She earned her B.S. Biology from UCLA in 2006, served in the Peaxe Corps as a Community Health Volunteer in Garabekewul, Turkmenistan from 2007-2009-, and moved on to earn her Pharm. D., from Washington State University in 2015. Cassandra completed her PGY1 residency at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, WA. She remains at the VA while she is currently completing a PGY2 residency in Health Systems Administration and serving as the PGY1 Residency Coordinator. Her focuses are in ambulatory care program development, inter-professional primary care, and residency program development.


Jeff Rochon, is the CEO of the Washington State Pharmacy Association. He earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Washington. Over his career, he has worked in hospital, clinic and community pharmacy settings.

He was recently appointed to the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries Hazardous Drugs Advisory Committee and is Chair of the Hazardous Drugs Model Programs Subcommittee.

Dr. Rochon’s other medication safety efforts include serving as Chair of the Steering Committee for the Washington Patient Safety Coalition and on the Steering Committee for the Alliance of Patient Medication Safety.  Dr. Rochon has received the University of Washington School of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumnus Award, the WSPA Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award, and the University of Washington School of Pharmacy Alumni Professional Excellence Award.


Jenny Arnold is the Director of Practice Development for the Washington State Pharmacy Association.  In this role, Dr. Arnold assists pharmacy professionals with creating impactful and sustainable advancements in pharmacy practice. Jenny completed her PharmD at the University of Washington in 2006, and her Pharmacy Practice Residency at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle in 2007. Prior to working at the association Dr. Arnold worked in Health Systems, and Independent Pharmacy where she had experience with long term care, dispensing and clinical initiatives including travel medicine, immunizations and home visits.

To Receive Credit:

In order to receive credit, you must get a score of at least 70% correct responses. If you do not achieve 70% or better, you will be allowed to take 3 retakes. If you pass with a 70%, you will receive a certificate and the CE will be uploaded to the CPE Monitor within a few days. You will need to make sure that your NABP e-Profile ID# and Date of birth are entered into your profile under the CPE Monitor Integration Details. If this information is not entered your CE can not be uploaded.


   The Washington State Pharmacy Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a Provider of continuing pharmacy education.
