MAA’s Interpreter Services Program (and broker list)
Washington State currently uses a brokerage system to schedule and pay for interpreter services for patients receiving Medicaid-eligible out-patient healthcare services. Please note that interpreters must be arranged 48 hours in advance of appointments with patients. See the memo describing the procedure.

Limited English Proficiency Federal Interagency Website

This site acts as a clearinghouse, providing and linking to information, tools, and technical assistance regarding limited English proficiency and language services for federal agencies, recipients of federal funds, users of federal programs and federally assisted programs, and other stakeholders.

HHS Office of Minority Health

The Office of Minority Health (OMH) is dedicated to improving the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will help eliminate health disparities. OMH was reauthorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-148). This site provides information on funding, data/statistics, cultural competency, health topics, minority populations, and more.

National Health Law Program

The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) serves legal services programs, community-based organizations, the private bar, providers and individuals who work to preserve a health care safety net for the millions of uninsured or underinsured low-income people. This site provides info on related issues, publications, media and more.

This presentation discusses laws and rights pertaining to patients with limited English proficiency, Identifies language needs of patients and suggests resources available for translation and interpretation services.

Analysis of State Pharmacy Laws: Impact of Pharmacy Laws on the Provision of Language Services February 2010

This analysis first outlines federal requirements for providing language services (oral interpretation and written translated materials) to LEP patients. Then, it summarizes results from a 50-state (plus the District of Columbia) survey of pharmacy laws that are related to the provision of language services.

Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence guideline available in Spanish (12/10)

For the first time, the entire 2008 U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline, Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, has been translated into Spanish. This guide will demystify the difference between interpreters and translators and, in the process, help you understand why the work of the interpreter and translator is indeed distinct, why not all bilingual individuals can be assumed to have the skills to interpret or translate, and why the same bilingual individual cannot always do both.

Accessible Emergency Information [for Deaf/HH, Blind/VI]  In an effort to better inform the community the Northeast Texas Public Health District has compiled 18 Emergency Preparedness Topics and formatted the information to be friendly to deaf, blind, and limited sight populations.
